Blade Trilogy Writer Wonders: Why Is MCU Reboot Taking So Long?
The writer behind the iconic Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to step in and help revive Mahershala Ali's stalled Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot of the vampire hunter. The much-anticipated project, first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, has faced numerous hurdles and delays, leaving fans and industry insiders puzzled about its future.
Recent developments have shed light on the project's current state. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to contribute to the film's soundtrack, took to social media to lament the project's collapse. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he shared. His comments were followed by revelations from costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was working on costumes for a 1920s-set Blade film before its production fell apart. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to the project, expressed his disappointment to Entertainment Weekly, citing the project's derailment despite initial enthusiasm and inclusivity.
The film has seen multiple directors come and go, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, without any making it to the finish line. Just seven months ago, Blade was removed from Marvel's release schedule, and no new date has been set. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige remains optimistic, reaffirming the studio's commitment to bringing Blade to the MCU during an interview with Omelete in November 2024. "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You're all up to date on what's happening," he stated, promising that the character will indeed make it to the MCU.
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Blade's reboot, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, has been a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds has advocated for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade, likening it to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds credits the original Blade films with paving the way for the superhero genre, stating on social media, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."
Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, as per The Hollywood Reporter. This move indicates Reynolds' interest in exploring new dynamics within the superhero universe, potentially signaling a new direction for Marvel's cinematic ventures.
