Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a pivotal moment in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, presents a significant challenge. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough to help you succeed. This challenging battle is the final stage of Chapter 2, culminating in Dong Zhuo's defeat.

Initial Assault:

Begin by capturing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Securing two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base conquest; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with a twin pike weapon. Once all bases are under your control, attack Hulao Gate.

Facing Dong Zhuo's Forces:

The ensuing battle is intense. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic, weakening the enemy defenses and paving your path.

Lu Bu's Intervention:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating nearby enemy officers to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly depletes. Lu Bu will eventually target your main base and Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain Lu Bu, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. A time limit is imposed; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, and Dong Zhuo remains undefeated, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu departs, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads poised for attack and your health replenished, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will unleash two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through the soldier barricade protecting the catapults. Eliminate the surrounding soldiers and officers. Your forces will then destroy the catapults.

The second Grand Tactic necessitates defeating an officer. Engage the officer via the right-side stairs, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, now fighting for Dong Zhuo. A duel with Diaochan is advisable to avoid being overwhelmed.

Once the Grand Tactics are countered, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should easily overcome his weakened army. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further simplifying the final confrontation with Dong Zhuo. While a duel is tempting, a standard defeat of Dong Zhuo is sufficient at this point.
