According to The Hollywood Reporter, a fierce bidding war has erupted among studios eager to secure the distribution rights for Cregger's vision of the classic Capcom survival horror series. Cregger will not only direct but also pen the screenplay for this anticipated reboot. The competition for distribution rights is intense, with four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., vying for the opportunity.

Cregger made a significant mark in the horror genre with his 2022 film Barbarian, which follows a woman who uncovers a terrifying secret at a rental house.
