Following the release of the highly anticipated Patch 8, Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a significant surge in player numbers on Steam. This latest update, which introduced 12 new subclasses and a brand new photo mode, has set the stage for developer Larian to shift its focus towards its next major project.

Patch 8, released last week, triggered a wave of excitement among fans eager to explore the new content. Over the weekend, Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved a concurrent player peak of 169,267 on Steam—an impressive milestone for a single-player focused RPG in its second year. While Steam data is publicly available, player numbers for PlayStation and Xbox remain undisclosed by Sony and Microsoft.

Reflecting on Patch 8's impact, Larian's CEO Swen Vincke expressed optimism about the game's future, citing not only the recent player boost but also the thriving mod support. "With mod support thriving, I think the game will now continue to do well for quite some time," Vincke stated on Twitter. He further noted that this success allows Larian to concentrate on their next ambitious project, acknowledging the challenge ahead: "We’ve got big shoes to fill."

Vincke also shared his satisfaction with the development effort behind Patch 8, which he sees as a significant achievement. "Feeling good today about where we are with BG3," he remarked. "Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again. It took a lot of development effort but I'm happy we did it."

Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, concluding a remarkable journey for Larian. Since its launch in 2023, the game has received critical acclaim and achieved substantial commercial success, maintaining strong sales into 2024 and 2025.

In a surprising move, Larian announced its departure from the Baldur’s Gate series and the Dungeons & Dragons universe to focus on a new, undisclosed game. This decision led to a media blackout as the team shifts its full attention to this mystery project.

Meanwhile, Hasbro, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, has hinted at future plans for the Baldur’s Gate series. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, revealed interest from multiple parties in continuing the franchise. "We're kind of working out our plans for the future and what we're going to be doing with that," Ayoub said. "And actually, in pretty short order, we're going to have some stuff to talk about around that."

While Ayoub did not specify whether this would involve a new Baldur’s Gate game or another form of content, such as a crossover with Magic: The Gathering, he expressed a long-term desire for a Baldur’s Gate 4. "It's somewhat of an unenviable position," he admitted, emphasizing a measured approach to future developments. "We've got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it," Ayoub added, hinting at forthcoming announcements.
