Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally rolled out its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of the RPG’s historic run. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released BG3’s Patch 8, the final major update for the game. The significance of this update has led to a surge in player count, propelling BG3 just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now jumped to over 169,000 players as of this writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to comment on the sudden rise in player numbers following Patch 8's release. He highlighted that the thriving mod support allows them to shift focus toward their "next big thing." It was previously reported that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to create an entirely new project.

As a result, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other potential partners to determine which studio could take on the development of a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

The final patch, first announced in November 2024 through a Steam blog post, has been in development for quite some time. Patch 8 introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and a host of other features. The developers have provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch’s contents on BG3’s official website. Compared to the November 2024 update, this set of patch notes boasts an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that this final update polishes BG3 to the developers' satisfaction.

Larian Studios has gone all out to enhance BG3, as evidenced by the multitude of fixes and updates included in this final version of the game. Although this will be their last major patch, Larian Studios remains committed to supporting the modding community moving forward.
