Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed that a potential Baldur's Gate 4 was abandoned after reaching a playable stage. CEO Swen Vincke shared this information in a recent interview with PC Gamer.

A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 was Shelved

Despite having a playable version of a BG3 sequel, Larian chose to pursue new projects. Vincke explained that, while the prototype was functional, the team felt the need to explore original concepts instead of investing further years in a familiar franchise. The prospect of extensive reworking and a lengthy development cycle ultimately led to the decision to shelve both BG4 and planned BG3 DLC.

Larian's Positive Outlook

The decision, according to Vincke, has boosted team morale significantly. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. Senior product manager Tom Butler confirmed the team will take a break after releasing Baldur's Gate 3's final major patch (anticipated for Fall 2024), which includes mod support, cross-play, and new endings.

Future Projects: Beyond Baldur's Gate

Larian's future may involve a return to their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity title will be unexpected. The studio's shift away from the Dungeons & Dragons license opens up possibilities for fresh creative directions.
