Guilty Gear Strive Arrives on Nintendo Switch in January 2025
Get ready, Switch players! Arc System Works is bringing the fighting game sensation, Guilty Gear Strive, to the Nintendo Switch on January 23rd, 2025. This version will include 28 characters and boasts rollback netcode for smooth online battles. While cross-play isn't included, it promises a great offline experience and online matches with other Switch users. Having enjoyed the game on Steam Deck and PS5, I'm eagerly anticipating this release. Visit the official website for more details.
Reviews & Mini-Views
Bakeru ($39.99)

Let's be clear: Bakeru isn't Goemon/Mystical Ninja, despite sharing some surface-level similarities with the classic series. It's crucial to approach Bakeru on its own merits, not as a Goemon sequel. Developed by Good-Feel (known for Wario, Yoshi, and Kirby titles), Bakeru is a charming, accessible 3D platformer.
The game follows Issun and Bakeru, a tanuki with shape-shifting abilities, as they traverse Japan, battling enemies, collecting treasures, and uncovering secrets. The over sixty levels provide a consistently engaging, if not always memorable, experience. I found the collectibles particularly rewarding, often reflecting the unique aspects of each Japanese location. The game offers a delightful blend of gameplay and cultural insights.

The boss battles are a standout element, showcasing Good-Feel's knack for creative and rewarding encounters. Bakeru takes some bold creative risks, with varying degrees of success. While some design choices may fall short, the successful ones are truly memorable, making the less successful ones easily forgivable. I found myself genuinely charmed by the game despite its imperfections.
The Switch version, however, suffers from performance inconsistencies. While it can reach 60fps, the framerate frequently dips, particularly during intense moments. While I'm not overly sensitive to framerate fluctuations, this could be a concern for some players. Despite the improvements since its Japanese release, performance issues persist.

Bakeru is a delightful 3D platformer with polished gameplay and inventive elements. Its charming personality shines through. While performance issues on Switch hold it back slightly, and those expecting a Goemon clone will be disappointed, Bakeru is a highly recommended title.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ($19.99)

Released alongside the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter offers a look at the life of Jango Fett, Boba Fett's father. This 2002 release follows Jango as he undertakes various bounty hunting missions, culminating in his fateful encounter with Count Dooku.
The gameplay involves tackling levels with specific targets, while optional bounties add replayability. While initially engaging, the repetitive gameplay and dated mechanics (common for games of its era) hinder the long-term experience. Targeting, cover mechanics, and level design all show their age. Even back then, it was a middling game at best.

Aspyr's remaster improves the visuals and performance, and the updated controls are a welcome addition. However, the archaic save system remains, potentially leading to frustrating restarts. Unlocking a Boba Fett skin is a nice touch. This version is the best way to experience the game if you choose to do so.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter holds a certain nostalgic appeal, offering a glimpse into the gaming style of the early 2000s. It's recommended primarily for those seeking a retro experience or a dose of nostalgia. Otherwise, the dated gameplay might prove too cumbersome.
SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5
Mika and the Witch’s Mountain ($19.99)

Drawing clear inspiration from Studio Ghibli films, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain puts players in the role of a young witch tasked with delivering packages around town to earn money for broom repairs. The vibrant world and charming characters create an enjoyable atmosphere.
The core gameplay loop, while simple, can become repetitive. The Switch version also struggles with performance issues, affecting resolution and framerate. A more powerful system would likely improve the experience. However, those willing to overlook technical imperfections will find a pleasant, if unspectacular, adventure.

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain is a visually appealing game with a solid core concept. Its charm and unique setting make it a worthwhile experience, but technical limitations hold it back. If the premise appeals to you, you'll likely enjoy the game.
SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5
Peglin ($19.99)

Peglin, a pachinko roguelike, has reached its 1.0 release across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. This unique blend of genres provides a challenging yet rewarding experience. The core gameplay involves aiming an orb at pegs on a board to damage enemies and progress through zone maps.
The game features upgrades, shops, and boss battles, creating a compelling strategic loop. The Switch port, while mostly well-optimized, suffers from slightly less smooth aiming than other versions and longer load times. Touch controls provide a viable alternative to the aiming issue.

The Switch version incorporates rumble, touchscreen, and button controls, catering to various play styles. The addition of internal achievement tracking is a nice touch. However, the lack of cross-save functionality is a missed opportunity.

Despite some minor shortcomings, Peglin is a fantastic game, especially for fans of pachinko and roguelike mechanics. The developers' commitment to updates is also a plus.

Peglin is highly recommended for Switch owners, particularly those who enjoy unique gameplay blends. The addition of various control options enhances the overall experience. -Mikhail Madnani
