Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to shape their character's physical appearance and select a Background, influencing their backstory and initial narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice. The key is choosing the Background that best suits your desired roleplaying experience.

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character hails from Bragganhyl Academy, their treatise on soul lineages causing conflict with a local lord. Their expertise lies in the occult, legal matters, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: A tragic past, marked by accusations of witchcraft after a village crop failure, led this character to the imperial court. Their spiritual sensitivity provides unique dialogue options related to magic and the Gods. This background is ideal for players envisioning a mage-like character.

• Noble Scion: Born into wealth and influence, this character's family's downfall led them to seek the emperor's favor. Loyalty to the empire is a defining trait for this Background.

• Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this character's past is humble, their preference for wilderness over city life making them a valuable asset to the empire as a tracker and spy. This suits players who prefer a hunter-style approach.

• War Hero: This character's loyalty and bravery in quelling a Skaenite uprising earned them a place among elite warriors. This Background is perfect for players wanting a warrior roleplay experience.

Starting Weapons: A Common Thread

Each Background starts with a common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:
