Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, the highly anticipated installment in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure franchise, is set to launch on February 14th. This new entry takes the series to feudal Japan, introducing a unique gameplay experience centered around two distinct protagonists and a redesigned parkour system.

Key features include:

• Revamped Parkour: The game limits climbing to designated "parkour highways," offering a more structured yet potentially more fluid traversal experience. Seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dodges, replace the traditional ledge-grabbing mechanics. A new prone position enables sprinting dives and slides. While this may initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, requiring strategic approaches and potentially utilizing the grappling hook.

• Dual Protagonists: Players control both Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and shadow maneuvers, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but with limited climbing abilities. This dual-protagonist system aims to appeal to both stealth and combat-focused players, blending classic Assassin's Creed gameplay with the RPG combat elements seen in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

• Feudal Japan Setting: For the first time, the Assassin's Creed franchise ventures into the rich historical setting of feudal Japan, promising a visually stunning and culturally immersive experience.

Ubisoft's Associate Game Director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, explained the parkour changes in a recent blog post, emphasizing the intention to create more engaging and controlled parkour pathways. The design shift allows for a more deliberate approach to level design, ensuring a satisfying and intuitive flow for players.

The game's launch in February will place it in direct competition with other highly anticipated titles, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed.
