Fans of Amazon's Android Appstore will soon need to find an alternative. TechCrunch reports Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. While the store has operated for over a decade, its closure will impact developers and users alike.

The Appstore will continue to function on Amazon's Fire TV and Fire Tablets. However, for Android users, apps installed from the Amazon Appstore may not receive future updates or support, according to Amazon's support page.

The Irony of its Demise

The timing is somewhat ironic, coinciding with the rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users and developers. Competitors, such as the Epic Games Store, offer incentives like free games programs, which Amazon lacked.
