Absolute Joker: The Ultimate Villain Revealed

Absolute Batman has emerged as one of DC's most significant comic book launches in recent years, with the first issue becoming the best-selling comic of 2024. Since its debut, the series has consistently topped sales charts, reflecting the enthusiastic response from readers to this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

Following the conclusion of their first story arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta shared insights with IGN on how they are redefining the traditional Batman mythos. Dive into their discussion on crafting a more muscular Batman, the impact of giving Bruce Wayne a living mother, and what lies ahead as the menacing Absolute Joker emerges from the shadows.

Designing Absolute Batman

The Batman of the Absolute Universe is an imposing figure, characterized by his hulking physique, shoulder spikes, and various enhancements to the classic Batsuit. This design earned Absolute Batman a spot on our list of the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta revealed that their approach was to create a Batman who stands out due to his size and lack of traditional wealth and resources.

"Scott's initial directive was to go big," Dragotta explained to IGN. "I drew him significantly larger at first, but Scott pushed for even more. We ended up with a Batman that rivals the Hulk in size."

Dragotta further elaborated, "The design was driven by the need to make him a weapon from head to toe. Every aspect of his suit serves a purpose, reflecting his necessity to rely on physical presence rather than wealth."

Snyder emphasized that without the financial power that traditionally aids Batman, his sheer size and intimidating presence become crucial. "In this universe, Batman's physicality is his superpower," he stated. "He's up against villains who underestimate him, but he uses that doubt as fuel to fight back harder."

The influence of Frank Miller's Miller’s iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover is evident, especially in a dramatic splash page in issue #6, where Batman is depicted leaping through the air against a backdrop of a lightning bolt, paying homage to Miller's work.

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman introduces significant changes to Batman's lore, most notably by keeping his mother, Martha, alive. This alteration transforms Batman from a solitary figure into one with deep familial ties, adding new layers to his character.

"Having Martha alive was a major decision," Snyder admitted. "It shifts the narrative significantly, making Batman more vulnerable but also giving him a moral compass. Martha's presence adds a dimension to Bruce that enriches the story."

Another key change introduced early in the series is Bruce's childhood friendships with characters who become his rogues gallery in the traditional DCU, including Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These relationships will be explored further, showing how they shaped Bruce's journey to becoming Batman.

Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask

In "The Zoo," Batman confronts Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, the leader of the nihilistic Party Animals. Although not a typical villain for a Batman origin, Black Mask fits perfectly into the arc's theme of chaos and decay.

"Black Mask represented the perfect villain for this story," Snyder said. "His nihilistic outlook and the aesthetic of his skull mask resonated with the story's themes. We transformed him into something fresh yet true to his core as a crime boss."

The climax of their confrontation in issue #6 showcases Batman's ferocity as he battles Black Mask on his yacht, using his sheer physicality to overpower the villain without crossing the line into murder.

The Threat of Absolute Joker

The series has been building towards a confrontation with the Absolute Joker, who is introduced as Batman's antithesis - wealthy, worldly, and devoid of humor. The end of "The Zoo" hints at Joker's plans, involving Bane to deal with Batman.

"Joker represents the system in this inverted universe, while Batman is the disruption," Snyder explained. "Their relationship is fundamental to the story, and Joker's already terrifying presence will evolve further as he faces Batman."

Dragotta teased that Joker has a master plan, with clues scattered throughout the series, suggesting a deep and complex narrative arc.

What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane

Issues #7 and #8, drawn by Marcos Martin, introduce a horror-infused version of Mr. Freeze, reflecting Bruce's internal struggles and the dark path Freeze has taken.

"Mr. Freeze's story mirrors Bruce's challenges," Snyder noted. "It's a twisted take on the character, fitting into our universe's darker tone."

As for Bane, Snyder confirmed that he will be a physically imposing adversary, designed to make Batman's silhouette look smaller in comparison.

The larger Absolute line, which includes Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman, will see new titles in 2025, including Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter. Snyder hinted at future crossovers and interactions within the Absolute Universe, promising an interconnected narrative that will deepen as the series progresses.

Absolute Batman #6 is available in stores now, and you can preorder the Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo HC on Amazon.
