The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike some other consoles, the Switch doesn't boast a massive library of dedicated Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. That's why this list combines the best of both handheld systems available on the Switch eShop, bypassing the Nintendo Switch Online app's GBA selection. We've curated ten top picks – four GBA titles and six from the DS – presented without any particular ranking. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my book, this GBA version is still a solid experience. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined playthrough. Regardless of the platform, Steel Empire is a captivating game, even for those who aren't usually fans of the genre.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man legacy found a worthy successor on the GBA. Mega Man Zero launches an excellent series of side-scrolling adventures, though its initial entry isn't perfectly polished. Subsequent games refine the formula, but this is the ideal starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay experiences, both equally rewarding. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in the series see diminishing returns, the original provides ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it sometimes even surpasses the phenomenal Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting mechanic encourages exploration, and the gameplay is addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its charm. A top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a gaming icon. This title occupies a unique space, born from the ashes of an unreleased GBA game (which is also getting a release soon!).
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
While originally a GBA title (though unlocalized at the time), Ace Attorney is undeniably a DS classic. These adventure games blend investigation and courtroom drama with witty humor and compelling narratives. The first game is a masterpiece, though later entries are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you must use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A thrilling and unforgettable experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version is a viable alternative if you lack access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games, each worthy of a playthrough. Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. But again, play them all!
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a successful adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile adventure.
