Zach Cregger, renowned for directing the chilling horror film Barbarian and being part of the comedy ensemble The Whitest Kids You Know, is now set to breathe new life into the iconic Resident Evil franchise with a fresh reboot movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a fierce bidding war has erupted among studios eager to secure the distribution rights for Cregger's vision of the classic Capcom survival horror series. Cregger will not only direct but also pen the screenplay for this anticipated reboot. The competition for distribution rights is intense, with four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., vying for the opportunity.

Cregger made a significant mark in the horror genre with his 2022 film Barbarian, which follows a woman who uncovers a terrifying secret at a rental house. His next project, Weapons, is reportedly receiving very positive feedback from test audiences. For a deeper dive into Barbarian, you can read our review here.

PlayThis new *Resident Evil* reboot will mark the second attempt at reviving the franchise on screen. The original series, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and featuring Milla Jovovich, comprised six films that, despite diverging from the source material, amassed a staggering $1.2 billion worldwide. In 2021, Johannes Roberts helmed *Welcome to Raccoon City*, a reboot striving for fidelity to the games, yet it failed to capture the essence of Capcom's celebrated series.

Constantin Film, the production company behind Anderson's films and Welcome to Raccoon City, will once again collaborate on this reboot, this time with PlayStation Productions. Established by Sony in 2019, PlayStation Productions aims to adapt its gaming IPs into films and TV series, with successful ventures like Uncharted starring Tom Holland, Gran Turismo, the The Last of Us TV series, and Twisted Metal.

Looking ahead, PlayStation Productions has an exciting slate of upcoming projects, including adaptations of Until Dawn, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush, Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a sequel to Uncharted. Additionally, a God of War TV show and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series are in development, promising to further expand Sony's footprint in entertainment.
