Talempong Pacik and Tambua Tansa: The Traditional Arts of Minang

Traditional arts that remain vibrant include tambua tansa, the piriang dance (both traditional and the broken glass variation), randai, saluang, talempong, rice stem pupuik, and the art of sprouts.

Tambua Tansa, in particular, is a staple at community celebrations. It is also a common feature at official government ceremonies.

While Tambua Tansa is practiced throughout the nagari in Agam Regency, it is most prominent in the area surrounding Lake Maninjau and in Lubuk Basung District.

The Tansa is a smaller drum, played with two special rattan sticks. It directs the Tambua musicians, as the dancer leading the group determines the rhythm to be played.

The Tambua itself is crafted from specific types of hollowed-out wood. They come in various sizes; larger ones, with a diameter of 50–60 cm, are called Tambadang Gadang. Smaller versions, 25–30 cm in diameter, are known as Tambua Kaciak (small drum). A typical group uses 6 to 12 drums.

Tambua Tansa serves as a powerful tool for gathering people. It is often used to call the community for gotong royong (mutual assistance) activities, such as building roads or other public facilities.

Typically, the group or nagari leader will play the Tambua Tansa at the worksite in the morning. Its thunderous sound quickly summons participants to the location.

Once work begins, the Tambua Tansa continues to energize the workers. Its uplifting rhythms, combined with the sound of the rice stem pupuik and the cheers of the laborers, make the hard work and heat of the sun feel more bearable.

At weddings and other festive occasions, Tambua Tansa is essential for creating a lively atmosphere. The celebration would feel incomplete without its powerful resonance.

Tambua Tansa is also used to welcome honored guests, such as during official visits from the regent, deputy regent, police chief, governor, camat, and other dignitaries.
