The Hang is a captivating musical instrument from the idiophone class, originating in Switzerland. Crafted with precision, it consists of two half-shells made from deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheets, which are meticulously glued together at the rim. This construction results in a unique 'UFO shape' with a hollow interior. The top side, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' all hammered into the steel. The bottom, referred to as the "Gu," is a plain surface with a rolled hole at its center, which produces a tuned note when the rim is struck. This instrument is also commonly known as a handpan.
The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan, yet it innovatively functions as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development is the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and various other instruments.
