The domino gaming pieces form a domino set, which is sometimes referred to as a deck or pack. The traditional Sino-European set consists of 28 dominoes, affectionately nicknamed bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends, each marked with a number of spots or left blank. A domino set is a versatile gaming tool, much like playing cards or dice, allowing for a variety of games. Extended sets such as double 9 and double 12 are used for games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its own favorite dominoes games: England enjoys muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican train, and Spain favors Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China. They made their way to Italy in the 18th century, though the evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains somewhat mysterious.

General Rules of Dominoes:

Blocking Game

The simplest dominoes variant is a two-player game using a double six set. The 28 domino tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, leaving the rest unused. Players place their tiles on-edge so they can see their own but not others'. The first player starts by playing a tile, which begins the line of play. Adjacent tiles must touch with matching values. Players take turns extending the line at either end. The game ends when a player plays their last tile or when the game is blocked, and no further moves are possible. The player who causes the block earns points from the remaining tiles in other players' hands, excluding their own.

Scoring Game

In scoring games, players earn points for specific configurations, moves, or emptying their hand. Most scoring games are variations of the draw game. In Muggins (All fives), players score when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the numbers on the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it after, the first player must draw an extra domino. In Mexican train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.

Draw Game

In a draw game, players can draw as many tiles as they want from the stock before playing a tile. The game's score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. The draw game is commonly referred to simply as "dominos."
